Lion Babe is the neo-soul creation of Jillian Hervey and Lucas Goodman. In 2013, rapper Childish Gambino asked the pair to open for him, a moment that sparked their meteoric rise to the upper echelons of the music world. Lion Babe’s tracks, always a mix of Hervey’s rich, sultry vocals and Goodman’s infectiously dark beats, can feel vaguely nocturnal like they were meant to be enjoyed under the cover of night. This made them the perfect act to soundtrack NeueHouse Madison Scare — our wild Halloween Party hosted in our NH Downstairs venue, where things got spooky and guests sported some truly creative costumes.
NeueJournal: Is Halloween overrated or underrated?
Jillian Hervey & Lucas Goodman: Halloween is that happy disaster of both! Dressing up is always fun, and there is nothing like walking down the street seeing rainbow wigs for sale, wish it was like that every day. The underrated part would be the pricey club nights and traffic.

JH & LG: Fecal matter everywhere.
NJ: If you could cast any spell what would it be?
JH & LG: Honesty potion.
NJ: How old is too old to go trick-or-treating?

JH & LG: Zombie
NJ: What were you scared of when you were a kid?
JH: I lived out in the country and at night my house would be so dark and quiet so the dark.

NJ: What’s the best costume you’ve ever seen?

LG: Yes, meet with the ancestors in Thailand.
NJ: What’s the biggest prank you’ve ever pulled or fallen victim to?
JH: I scared Lucas once by wearing a creepy Curious George mask and fur coat. I was hiding behind a couch when he walked in, amazing for me, not so much for him!
NJ: Which character would you be in a rendition of Adam’s Family?
JH: Cousin Itt
LG: Gomez Addams
