We asked NeueHouse member Shantell Martin – artist, illustrator and designer – to answer 10 questions about her work life and her life’s work.
What is your morning ritual?
If I were to write myself some morning instructions based on a typical morning it would look something like this:
It’s 7am Shantell wake up
Sneeze between 5-10 times
Turn on Rachel Maddow (Will help you get out of bed)
Shower and all that Jazz
Eat breakfast Number one (Fruit or Muesli)
Check emails, instagram, facebook etc
Eat breakfast number two (Fruit or Muesli)
Leave home for the day
What’s your go-to work attire?
I have a pretty solid uniform, which consist of a drawn on shirt, drawn of shoes accompanied by black or white Jeans or shorts depending on the weather. I always have a comb hidden in my hair.
If this were a job interview what would you say were your greatest strengths and weaknesses?
Strengths: I’m focused, kind, sharing, a good listener, ambitious, detail-oriented, enjoy meeting people, punctual, diverse.
Weaknesses: Can be pretty indecisive, will consistently chose being spontaneous over making plans.
What are you listening to on your commute? (Please list podcasts, albums/music, audiobooks etc.)
Day to day I don’t listen to anything as I’d rather see/hear what’s going on around me, but I do listen to podcasts on long flights and train rides. In no particular order some of them are:

If you could have any fictional character be your boss, who would it be?
Boss? – No thank you.
Who are your heroes in real life?
Huge fan of the super talented, kind, free individuals out there in the world that I have had the pleasure to get to know a little. To just name a few of those; Kristjana Williams, Casey Neistat, my wife & Zach Lieberman.
If you could have one work super-power what would it be?
My initial thought would be to have the ability to work at light speed, so that I’d be able to create a lift time of work in a fraction of the time… But actually i’d give myself extraordinary organizational skills.

How do you feel about failure?
Feel a few ways about this, I do believe that some times we need to go back to move forward. But also if you’re failing at something more that once there is a good chance it’s not for you.
